1.1 Background of the Study
Youth identity formation is a complex process influenced by social, cultural, and media environments. Nollywood, as Africa’s largest film industry, plays a significant role in shaping societal norms and individual identities, particularly among youths (Okeke & Afolabi, 2023). The narratives in Nollywood dramas often explore themes of ambition, morality, relationships, and societal expectations, reflecting the realities and aspirations of Nigerian youth. In Olamaboro Local Government Area, Kogi State, Nollywood dramas serve as a window into national culture while also influencing the self-perception and social behaviors of young viewers. By examining the characters, settings, and values depicted, one can understand how these films contribute to shaping youth identity in this region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While Nollywood dramas are widely consumed by Nigerian youth, their impact on identity formation in specific local contexts like Olamaboro remains underexplored. The portrayal of characters and societal norms in these films can reinforce positive aspirations but also perpetuate stereotypes or unrealistic expectations (Abiola & Dike, 2024). This study investigates how Nollywood dramas influence youth identity in Olamaboro, addressing a gap in understanding the interplay between media and personal development.
